Attic Update

Heather has instructed me that it is now my "job" to handle any updates on the attic progress. With the baby being born last Saturday, work has slowed some...

If you were familiar with our attic, it was previously finished (very poorly). I wasn't happy with it so that is how it all began. All projects grow in their scope once demo work is done, and problems are revealed. One problem i did not expect was the damage I found on my "new" roof.

I found two areas hiding between the shingles and the drywall like the one shown above. This is several years of neglect from a leaking roof. I knew the house had a leaky roof when I bought it, and that was the first thing we did (within one month actually). The contractor who did the roof was supposed to replace any damaged boards on the roof but did NOT! Instead they put a thin piece of aluminum over the holes and called it good.
So to rectify the problem I called up the company that did my roof before, and persuaded them to cover the damage under the 5 year workmanship warranty (of which we are on year four). So out they came, and off went the roof (again!) and new boards were installed to repair the damage (all at no cost to me!). Really this isn't home improvement, unless you count the two wasps nests the roofer had to extinguish! Now I have that warm fuzzy feeling of having a good solid roof over my head (again).

So while the roofers were up bouncing all over the roof, I had to hold back the drywall finisher so he didn't tape and fix all the seams, only to have them crack because of excessive movement. He started work up again last Saturday (while I was at the hospital dad let him in) and he is just about done. I guess that is one of the blessings of hiring work out, all this week I have been busy with Liam and the family and work has been moving forward even at its slow pace.

The finisher expects to be done tonight, so then it will be back to me to paint, trim out, and arrange the carpet.

It is looking really good, and my finisher is a perfectionist. He does this for a living but runs side jobs in the evening. He says this is the hardest job he has EVER done, and there are joints he has never seen. There are some pretty crazy things where two roof slopes meet, along with a vertical wall, etc. Add in the fact this is a 82 yr old house and nothing is straight or square (except what I have put in of course :) ).

Of course it will be much nicer than what is found in the rest of the house. The house in general looks good, but the old plaster walls certainly show their age, this attic however even with its imperfections will be better than the rest of the house.

Looks great, Troy! Can't wait to see it (all done???) when we come in September. So why does Brian get the good room? You and Heather should move up there and have a little suite! Either way, I'm sure it will be awesome.
